London Goes LED in Biggest Ever Streetlight Upgrade

Image
Over 35,000 London streetlights are to go LED in a massive 'invest to save' project. Transport for London is to spend close to £11 million installing a central management system and upgrading 35,000 lights to LED by 2016. Further upgrades will be made over the next 10 years, with most of London's streetlights to be LED by 2023, as part of a £4 billion investment in the capital's roads. Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the project would bring lighting on the London's roads 'up to 21st century standards'. Havard Engineering and CU Phosco - both winners at this year's Lux Awards - will benefit from the work, with Havard winning a multimillion pound contract for the controls and CU Phosco picked as a preferred supplier for the post-top luminaires. The controls system will be aligned with traffic flow and road usage, and will reduce maintenance costs by keeping track of light failures. The programme aims to reduce carbon emissions by around 9,7

Security lighting: new opportunities

Image
Andy Clements, Managing Director at ESP, explains how security and in particular EAP can provide Electricians with good business opportunities. As the light summer evenings give way to the long dark nights of winter, security once again comes to the fore as home and business owners focus on keeping their properties protected.  This presents new opportunities for installers, as the requirement for maintaining or upgrading security systems increases. After all, the last thing criminals want is attention being brought to their activity. Permanent lighting will illuminate and deter them. However, triggered lighting is far more likely to catch the attention of the property owner or neighbour.  The solution is the use of PIR (Passive infra-red) technology to maintain a watchful eye and provide illumination only when required. The intruder suddenly feels over exposed and risks the attention of passers-by being drawn to the scene. The choice of PIR detectors is wide and varied. Featu

Energy Efficiency Financing for LED Upgrade Projects

Image
The Carbon Trust offers support and advice for companies that want to implement energy-efficiency schemes. It also runs an accredited supplier scheme. Alongside this it can offer – thanks to a partnership with Siemens Financial Services – structured finance packages which are designed so that savings exceed repayments, following an independent assessment of the energy-saving potential. Paul Smyth of Salix Finance, which was also represented in the discussion on funding for lighting projects, said that streetlighting and LED lighting is a focus for his clients, with spend on such projects amounting to £7.2m and £5.2m respectively as of year-end 2012/2013. He notes a change of emphasis in chosen lighting solutions, with LED now representing more than half of such solutions due to the cost, lumens per watt and efficiency gains. T5, in comparison, represented 48 per cent of projects in the year ending 2012/13 – for the first time, less than LED equivalents. He says Salix clients

All new Waitrose stores to be 100% LED

Image
Speaking at LuxLive today, Toby Marlow, general manager of sustainable development at Waitrose, revealed that all new Waitrose stores will be lit 100 per cent by LEDs from now on. Marlow described how the retailer’s Ipswich store has undergone a complete LED refit covering office, retail and warehouse space – resulting in an overall efficacy of just seven watts per square metre, reducing running costs by up to 42 per cent. ‘Moving towards LED has been a step-change in design,’ Marlow said. ‘We can now position light where we want it and make greater use of contrasts. Efficiency and colour rendering has improved dramatically and we’re now up to 130 lumens per watt,’ he told the audience at the event. Marlow says the redesign is between 40 per cent to 42 per cent more efficient than its equivalent T5 scheme – savings that would not have been possible just a year ago. LED lighting first got a foothold in refrigerators and freezers, because LEDs work well in the cold, but M

Lack of lighting knowledge 'hinders energy savings'

Companies are missing out on big savings because of a lack of awareness of energy-efficiency measures such as lighting, according to a report published this week by the Confederation of British Industry. In the report, the CBI points to the ‘untapped potential’ of energy-efficiency schemes for businesses, and cites a lack of knowledge as one of the biggest challenges. The organisation is now calling on firms to invest more in energy-efficiency measures such as lighting upgrades to reduce costs and protect against long-term rises in energy prices. Rhian Kelly, the CBI’s director for business environment policy, said: ‘Energy efficiency has sneaked under the radar in the UK’s energy debate and is making a material contribution to UK growth. But there is so much economic and environmental potential that remains unfulfilled. ‘With energy prices still on the rise, energy efficiency can help mitigate the impact on firms, particularly heavy users,’ she said. The CBI's report c

Updated Part L to come into force in April 2014

Courtesy of Lux Magazine: Updated Part L to come into force in April 2014 The long awaited new version of Part L- the section of the Building Regulations that covers energy efficiency will come into force in April 2014, the government has announced. The new regulations will insist on a 6% cut in CO2 emissions for new homes, and 9% for non-domestic buildings - significantly less than the 20% originally envisioned. Baroness Hanham also told Parliament that minimum efficiency standards for non-domestic lighting upgrades will be strengthened. Th regulations were originally supposed to come into force this year. The government now says the full regulations and impact assessment will be published 'shortly' with guidance to be published ' during the course of the summer'. Lighting industry figures have been frustrated by the uncertainty surrounding the contents of the new regulations. Communities minister Don Foster said "Today's measures mean business an

Analysts Predict Strong Sales for LED GU10 Bulbs

Sales of LED bulbs are increasing this year, just as they have consistently in recent times as prices have fallen and more buyers have gained an appreciation for the benefits of this type of lighting technology. Virtual Strategy Magazine reports that retail insiders predict that sales of LED GU10 bulbs and other competing products such as LED MR16 models will continue on an upward trajectory in terms of sales well into the future, if current trends continue. The chief benefit of GU10 lamps and similar LED lighting solutions is that they consume much less energy than traditional bulbs and can even outdo products that are supposedly designed for efficiency. LED lighting is increasing in importance both for commercial lighting purposes and in the domestic marketplace, with consumers becoming familiar with the options that are available to them. It has even got to the point that specialist retailers can emerge, dealing not only in LED lamps and associated solutions, but

Verbatim's new VxRGB LED lamp for True-Colour performance

Image
An introduction to a very interesting new LED product that is specifically designed for high-end clients in jewelry stores, museums, high-end retail stores, hospitality etc. We now sell the brand new Verbatim VxRGB True Colour LED lamp. The VxRGB is a special (only one in their range currently). It is designed as a ‘True Colour’ lamp, based on completely new technology that renders the entire colour spectrum (unlike old CRI/Ra standards which are skewed and incomplete esp. with LEDs). This lamp is manufactured using a violet chip (instead of blue), and uses a mix of red, green, and blue phosphors instead of just yellow phosphor. During a Verbatim demonstration we looked at a few sample items using standard halogen, standard LED, and the VxRGB, and sure enough the VxRGB made the colours really vital and clear (e.g. the guys navy blue sports jacket was really navy blue instead of black!). The VxRGB lamp works best by installing it alongside regular LED lamps, as the regular LED l

Reduce costs with LED - Kosnic and Professional Electrician June 2013

An interesting article by Kosnic: LEDs were invented more than 50 years ago but they have taken decades to provide their worth in mainstream applications.  Problems with colour rendition, lack of standardisation, and inability to dim have given LED lams a bad press and created confusion within the marketplace. However, innovations in LED lighting technology and new product development are prompting an e-evaluation of whether now is the right moment to realise the carbon savings and energy efficiency of LEDs. There are three main benefits of LEDs: Robust LEDs are solid state light sources and so are very robust.  While an incandescent lamp will last for approximately 1,000 hours, an LED alternative will last for up to 40,000 hours.  Many manufacturers will be happy to guarantee this period of operation, offering free replacements in the event of early failure. Therefore, an LED lamp fitted in a reception area and used for seven hours every day of the week, will still be funct

LEDs save £430M

LED lighting saved £430 million worth of electricity in the US last year, according to a study by the US Department of Energy. Focusing on the most common lighting applications, the DoE estimated that 49 million LED lamps and luminaires were installed last year, saving about 71 trillion units.  ©Lux Magazine, July-13 Shuttla www.novelenergylighting.com
