LEDs for Boats, Yachts, and Marine Applications

Image
An interesting article about the increasing trend of in LED lighting on boats, yachts, and other marine vehicles. Many boaters really on batteries to keep the lighting on when moored. LEDs reduce power draw by up to 85%, so its easy to see why  it makes sense to replace halogens with LEDs! [credit Power and MotorYacht magazine] An experienced boater realizes the benefits of retrofitting his 27-year-old boat with LED lighting. When you hear the term “LED lights,” your first vision may be a plethora of bright white, blue, and other-colored lights illuminating the outside of a boat and even the water beneath the hull. Like a scene out of a science-fiction movie, eh? But there is a practical side to Light-Emitting Diodes or LEDs that makes them attractive for use in a boat’s interior. This spring Will Keene, president of marine equipment manufacturer Edson International ( www.edsonmarine.com ) in New Bedford, Massachusetts, upgraded the lights on his 1985 Grand Banks 42, and

LED at 50: An illuminating history by the light's inventor

Heres an interesting article about the history of LEDs, by the BBC: The light-emitting diode has brightened our lives for half a century - from lighting up the city streets at night, to decorating Christmas trees each December. The LED started life in October 1962, as a single red illumination in a General Electric research lab in New York state. Now - as one of the world's biggest retailers, Ikea, announces that by 2016 the only lighting products it will sell will be LED-based ones - Prof Nick Holonyak Jr from the University of Illinois, takes a look back at how it all began with his invention of the first practical visible-spectrum light-emitting diode. Ultra-efficient LED puts out more power than is pumped in

An interesting news article on LED developments courtesy of Wired.co.uk: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-03/09/230-percent-efficient-leds MIT physicists have managed to build a light-emitting diode that has an electrical efficiency of more than 100 percent. You may ask, "Wouldn't that mean it breaks the first law of thermodynamics?" The answer, happily, is no. The LED produces 69 picowatts of light using 30 picowatts of power, giving it an efficiency of 230 percent. That means it operates above "unity efficiency" -- putting it into a category normally occupied by perpetual motion machines. However, while MIT's diode puts out more than twice as much energy in photons as it's fed in electrons, it doesn't violate the conservation of energy because it appears to draw in heat energy from its surroundings instead. When it gets more than 100 percent  electrically -efficient, it begins to cool down, stealing energy from its environment to conve

Low voltage halogen lamps set to be banned from next year

News article from LUX Magazine (17-Feb-2012): Low-voltage halogen lamps are to be banned from next year under draft legislation drawn up by the European Commission, Lux magazine can reveal. 12V MR16 lamps are the workhorses of retail, commercial and, increasingly, residential lighting and millions are sold every year in the EU. But under Ecodesign legislation, ‘poor performing’ versions are to be phased out from next year. Better-performing versions, such as those with infra-red coatings, will follow by 2016. The law sets out a series of minimum performance measures, including lifetime, output in a 90-degree cone and ef ficiency, which will effectively mean that low quality lamps – often Far Eastern imports – will be excluded from sale in the European Union from 2013. The phase-out is part of the Ecodesign legislation, which led to the phase-out of incandescent lamps in recent years. Paul Hodson of the directorate-general for energy is currently consulting with peers before pu
