Stansted and East Midlands airports to get new controls

Stansted and East Midlands Airports will soon be treated to new lighting schemes and control systems.
The new systems will be modelled on the one recently installed at Manchester Airport, which links lights to the the airport's flight monitoring system, allowing lights to be turned on in certain areas when passengers are due to arrive.
All three airports are owned by Manchester Airports Group.
Speaking at the Smart Lighting Conference in London in February, Andy Sheridan, services facility manager of Manchester Airport, and Jon Beswick, technical engineer at Manchester Airport Group, revealed that the group is ‘hoping to deliver the same, energy-efficient LED scheme to Stansted Airport’ which has given Manchester Airport savings of 80-90 per cent.
Stansted Airport has its own team of engineers but will be consulting Sheridan and Beswick, who oversaw the implementation of the lighting control system in Manchester Airport. There is currently no set timeframe for the project but Beswick says: ‘Watch this space, we’re doing a lot of exploratory work there at the moment.'
‘We’re working in conjunction with the Stansted team to share best practice,’ said Sheridan. ‘They’re very interested in what we’ve done and if we’ve done something really good they’ll be doing the same as us.’
East Midlands Airport will have its check-in hall, gates 8 to 17 and immigration area fitted with Philips Maxos, DBS498C and PowerBalance fittings in a project due to start at the end of March. The scheme is expected to reduce energy consumption in the areas by around 70 per cent.
Terminals 1 and 3 of Manchester Airport are also in the final stages of a £500,000 upgrade to their lighting control system, which has already been completed in Terminal 2. ‘The project has just been signed off. Contractor mobilisation will be finished in about eight weeks’ time and then the project will be completed later in 2014,’ said Beswick.
